Sammy Levy Mitzvah Project – BUDDY UP with Special Needs Child to Play Sports

Sammy’s love for sports, and the opportunity to share that passion with children who need extra support, is the basis for his Mitzvah Project. He is organizing a “Buddy Day” at the Community Center in Summit so he, and other student athletes, can spend time with kids who benefit from the tryCAN program for Special Needs.

He hopes to raise $2,000 for tryCAN at the event, which is Monday, February 17th (President’s Day), from 10 am to 1 pm.

Greetings from the President of Ohr Shalom/Summit JCC to TSS members

Greetings to our new friends!

I am the current president of Congregation Ohr Shalom - Summit JCC. I, our board, our members, clergy, and staff are excited about the possibilities that a combination of our two congregations present. Having met with a number of your members and your wonderful rabbi, I share the conviction that we are a terrific match, sharing a common vision and approach to cultural, social and justice issues. As they say, though, seeing is believing.

I invite you to attend our services as well as any or all of our upcoming events. Below is the email blast that went out to our members highlighting January and February programs (and, of course, you can always go to www.summitjcc.org).

I particularly want to highlight our Artist in Residence weekend - January 24-26. This annual event brings in noteworthy contemporary musicians from around the country (and world) who perform during services and offer concerts during the 3 days. It is always amazing to see and hear the energy they bring and the spirit and participation they evoke.

I hope to see you soon.

With Regards,
Phil Kantor

Letter from Roberta & Ellen – News about Special Congregational Meeting

January 12, 2020

Dear Congregants,

We are a community, whether you have been a Temple Sha’arey Shalom (TSS) member for over 50 years or for five days. And, we intend to move forward with a Congregation that best matches our ritual, song, practice, and spirit. Your Board of Trustees unanimously voted to continue investigating a merger with JCC of Summit/Ohr Shalom.

Since our January 8, 2020 announcement of that vote, several current Temple Sha’arey Shalom members have advised us that they are being invited to join synagogues other than JCC Summit/Ohr Shalom. You may be invited to join a congregation other than JCC- and you have the choice to do so. But, please know that any financial or other benefits that will come with affiliating with the JCC of Summit/Ohr Shalom will apply only to Temple Sha’arey Shalom members in good standing as of May 31, 2020. “Good standing” is defined as meeting all outstanding financial obligations to TSS no later than May 31, 2020.

Before you decide to join a synagogue other than JCC of Summit/Ohr Shalom, we hope that you will take time to learn why TSS members who met with other synagogues that were considered (ten members have done this) have independently recommended the JCC of Summit/Ohr Shalom as the best congregation to affiliate with - which was also unanimously endorsed by your Board of Trustees.

Some TSS members have already expressed an interest in attending a Friday night service at JCC of Summit/Ohr Shalom and we highly recommend that you experience their warmth, music, and service. In the upcoming months you will have the opportunity to meet the leadership and congregants of JCC of Summit/Ohr Shalom and learn of plans to create an exciting new entity - one that is worthy of your support. We expect formal negotiations to begin as soon as possible and when more information becomes available, small group sessions will be scheduled to answer questions to the best of our ability. Then, a congregational meeting will be called with the requisite ten (10) days’ notice to vote on matters related to the affiliation.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you as we go forward as a community in order to maintain our strength, vibrancy, and stability. We will work with you to achieve the best possible outcomes for Temple Sha’arey Shalom, for you, and for your families.

Please be sure to attend the upcoming special congregational meeting on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. in the social hall of Temple Sha’arey Shalom to vote on the sale of Temple assets.

Let’s face the future together as we move forward.

B’Shalom,

Roberta Krumholz and Ellen Lieberman

Letter from Roberta & Ellen – Merger/New Entity with JCC of Summit

January 8, 2020

Dear Temple Friends and Family,

Since our inductions as co-Presidents in June 2018, you have provided support, encouragement, and honesty. We welcomed your input and the Board of Trustees, Executive Officers, Clergy, staff, and teachers, have worked hard and have remained dedicated to running the Temple, being fiscally responsible, and transparent on all issues.

This letter provides you with important and updated information about our current financial status and the investigations of a merger/joint creation of a new liberal Jewish entity by the INE Committee (Investigating New Entities).

Our financial situation inhibits our ability to operate. This year and in the past there were unexpected and expensive repairs. Membership continues to decline despite the hard work of our membership committee, and, some financial deficits carried over from years past. While we operate lean, our fixed monthly expenses exceed our current monthly cash flow, reserves are low, and we don’t have sufficient income from donations and fundraising to continue operation past June 30, 2020. Even reaching that date will be a challenge after March 1, 2020. The Board authorized the investigation of and the sale of the caretaker house and Temple assets in order to continue to operate this fiscal year. The office staff and the caretaker are aware of this need.

We know that you have questions about that, and assets cannot be sold without a congregational vote. So, please come to a congregational meeting on Sunday, January 26, at 10:30 a.m. where we will ask for your support for the sale of the house, and support of retaining legal council, which both need to be done immediately.

To help us please actively support all of our fundraising efforts through June. The most important is the Tricky Tray on March 26, 2020. The Tricky Tray will be fun, you can win great prizes, and you will be helping us pay our bills. Information is being mailed. Please reserve a table and invite your non-temple friends to come and make this a success. Please also support our other fundraisers such as the clothing drive and Mother’s Day plant sale.

Part of the reason that we are in this financial difficulty is because several years ago the Long Range Planning Committee projected that our membership would continue a downward trajectory and resulting decline in income. The committee members and the name of the committee changed, but their focus, dedication, and hard work on researching the possibilities for the continued existence of Temple Sha’arey Shalom, ongoing meetings with other nearby congregations, and a review of our past and present financial situation remained on point, thorough, and facts-based for the past three years.

Input was also gathered from our congregants in order to determine what you wanted if a merger occurs. The information was obtained from you through focus groups, surveys, small group discussions, and information feedback sessions. We continued to update you through regular postings in the Scroll, information sessions, congregational meetings, and emails. Our intention is always transparency about our financial situation and about the investigation of a merger/the formation of a new entity with a congregation that best matches our ritual and liberal Jewish practices.

The INE Committee has completed its research on January 7, 2020 at the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees made a recommendation to close Sha’arey Shalom as of June 30, 2020. Further, their recommendation was that if a merger were to occur, a new entity should be created with the JCC of Summit (Ohr Shalom). The meetings with them revealed that they are a welcoming, warm, liberal Jewish community that is vibrant, financially stable, and most closely aligns with Temple Sha’arey Shalom’s ritual, practice, and spirit. The Finance Committee, the Executive Board, and the Board of Trustees endorsed the recommendations of the INE Committee. This merger/new entity with JCC of Summit has the support of our Rabbi. The discussions with the JCC have been very positive so far; we expect that to continue as we discuss and resolve the details with them.

This is, however, not a “done deal.” This is a recommendation, which will come before you to vote on at a congregational meeting in the future (not on January 26 which is only about financial matters). Your vote at the future congregational meeting is the only way that the recommendation of affiliation with the JCC of Summit can be approved. Of course their congregation also has to vote on it. And, you will have the opportunity for discussion and questions. Please note that what we present that meeting may be tentative and subject to change.

This is a lot of information in one letter that may be difficult to process. You may have many questions, emotions, and thoughts about the recommendations. There are concerns about upcoming Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Confirmations, religious school, transportation to Summit for those that need it, and more. You need details and facts about why the dissolution of Temple Sha’arey Shalom is our only option at this time and why the JCC of Summit emerged as the recommendation of the Committee.

At this time, the Presidents and committee members do not have any more information than we have shared in this letter. However, we will schedule small group information sessions to answer your questions to the best of our ability. You will hear directly from the INE Committee, the Presidents, and the financial stewards of our Temple at these meetings. Once the smaller information sessions are concluded, a special congregational meeting will be called with the requisite ten days’ notice.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and lead you through these difficult decisions. We look forward to working with you to achieve the best possible outcomes for Temple Sha’arey Shalom and for you and your families. Let’s face the future together as we move forward as a Temple family.

B’Shalom,

Roberta Krumholz and Ellen Lieberman

Letter from Roberta & Ellen to Pre School Parents

Dear Preschool families,

The most important information in this letter is that we love your children. We really do. They are smart, funny, silly, and ready to take on the world! And, we know how much you and your children appreciate our teachers, the warm environment we create so that children succeed, and the active learning that surrounds your child. We are especially thankful for our preschool director, Mindy. She is exceptional and brings joy, fun, and education to the children and staff, everyday.

It is, therefore, with a heavy heart that we write this letter to inform you that Temple Sha’arey Shalom will be closing on June 30, 2020. That means that, unfortunately, we are not able to operate a summer program or preschool after June 30, 2020. This deeply saddens us because we want to continue to do what we do best-- and we know you want that, too. However, our financial situation prohibits this.

We have to tell you, now, so that can plan for next year. But, please be assured that every minute that your child spends with us from now through June will be the same high quality education, care, fun, and skill development that you and your child expect and deserve.

Our four-year olds will be ready for kindergarten and will “hit the playground running” in academics, social skills, and classroom readiness. Our two’s and three’s will continue to learn age-appropriate new skills with our nurturing and talented teachers and those special guests who come in to read to your children, the visiting seeing eye dogs, and the special drop-ins from the firemen and mail delivery folks. Nothing changes for you or your child between now and June. Our teachers embrace every moment and will continue to do so.

We are hopeful that we will create a new entity with another Temple that is just a short driving distance away – the JCC of Summit (Ohr Shalom). They do have a preschool, but we don’t know, yet, which staff, if any, might become part of the new entity. These negotiations are just underway and any affiliation needs the vote of our congregants. We will keep you updated as we have more information.

This situation resulted from unexpected and expensive building repairs this year and in the recent past. While we operate lean, our fixed monthly expenses exceed our current monthly income, reserves are low, and we don’t have sufficient revenue from membership dues, donations, tuition, and fundraising to continue operations.

So, we are asking for your help. Stay with us through June. Help us finish out the year in an amazing way. And, please actively support all of our upcoming Temple and preschool fundraising efforts. Your support will be used - this year - to benefit your child through our preschool and general operations.

The most important upcoming fundraiser is the Tricky Tray on March 26, 2020, beginning at 5:30pm. The Tricky Tray will be fun, you can win great prizes, and you will be helping. Please reserve a table and invite your non-preschool friends to come and make this a success. Please also support our other fundraisers such as the clothing drive and Mother’s Day plant sale.

If an opportunity were to emerge to enable the preschool to continue, be assured that we will be sure to immediately notify you.

Thank you for the opportunity to partner with you and your family.

With warmest wishes,

Roberta Krumholz and Ellen Lieberman
Co-Presidents

On Thursday, March 26, 2020, we will be holding a Tricky Tray event to raise money for charitable work and in support of the Temple, so that we may continue all that we do. Year-round our congregation works in the community: feeding the homeless on a monthly basis, supporting the NJ Veterans, working and partnering with other organizations that help refugees, and helping those who need shelter, clothing, food, and more.

This important fundraiser will enable us to continue to serve others. We expect over 200 people will attend this Tricky Tray and we need your HELP! Donating is a great way to generate good will and attract new customers. We are asking you to please contribute a gift card or certificate, a business or professional service, a new item or even cash or gift cards. Any new merchandise is greatly appreciated. In exchange for your donation, you will be advertised/listed in our program next to your donation.

Our tax exempt number is below. We will, if you’d like, provide you with a formal letter of receipt for your donation. This letter can also be retained for your records.

Contributions can be sent directly to the Temple office, Temple Sha’arey Shalom 78 South Springfield Avenue, Springfield, NJ 07081 Attn: Roberta. Or, please call the Temple to arrange for someone to pick up the merchandise, 973-379-5387. Or you can call Roberta 908-561-4841.
