Dear Congregants,

Please come to Shabbat services on Friday night for "pray for solidarity". We join this weekend with Jews, Muslims and Catholic as we pray together marking the period of shiva of the 11 Jews who were murdered at Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. Our services will be shortened so that we can all join together in song, in solidarity, in hope for a better future for this country. Come, bring your children and your friends. We will join in songs of peace and memorialize our dead.

The service will be held at Temple Sha’arey Shalom, 78 S. Springfield Avenue at 7:30 pm.

Temple Sha'arey Shalom Pre-school Visit to Springfield Fire Department

Temple Sha’arey Shalom would like to thank the Springfield Fire Department for hosting the pre-school’s children on October 29. The firemen showed the children the fire trucks and taught them about fire safety. Fireman Sal Cocuzza, wore full fire safety gear, including his oxygen mask, to show the children what a fireman may look like and to encourage them not to be afraid of the firemen. It was a great visit and the children loved playing on the fire truck!

Pittsburgh Temple Shooting

Dear Friends,

Our hearts are broken by the shooting at Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh. What could be more tragic than innocent brothers and sisters murdered at our people's most sacred weekly gathering - a Shabbat service with a Brit Milah. It offers little comfort that the shooter was taken into custody at the time that he began shooting.

In addition, we are concerned for our own congregation's security. I want you to know that security of our congregants, students and staff continues to be our highest priority. Our security committee, staff and lay leadership work closely with world-class security consultants to regularly review our many security protocols and procedures. We are also grateful for our longstanding close partnership with the Springfield police, which helps us maintain a strong security posture.

In this morning's Torah portion Abraham argues with God on behalf of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. God promises to spare the cities from destruction if Abraham can find just 10 righteous people. In the end Abraham cannot, and the cities are destroyed. Nonetheless, this story is meant to teach us that a very small number of good people can redeem the entire world. Sadly, this week we have witnessed just a few individuals wreak fear and destruction. Let us gather together, so that we can bring hope, healing and peace to a world so deeply in need of redemption.

Chanukah Brunch – December 2nd ?

Temple Sha’arey Shalom Speaker Series

We will be offering a two stimulating and informative speakers in October.

On Friday, October 19, Dr. Karen Gaffney, Professor of English at Raritan Valley Community College and author of “Dismantling the Racism Machine”, will trace the history of race relations in America starting in Colonial times and provide specific action steps for combating racism.

On Friday, October 26, Khadijah White, Professor at Rutgers and television journalist, will speak on race, gender and politics in the media. Professor White’s articles and commentary have appeared in publications including The Atlantic and the New York Times.

The two topics will be presented as part of Friday evening services at 8:00 pm. Everyone is welcome and no tickets are required.

Sha’arey Shalom’s new cantor in tune with congregation

Come Meet Cantor Jason Rosenman

Welcome Cantor Jason Rosenman

Cantor Jason M. Rosenman will be serving as Cantor of Temple Sha’arey Shalom in Springfield, NJ beginning in July of 2018. He was ordained as a Cantor from the Hebrew Union College (HUC) -- Jewish Institute of Religion -- School of Sacred Music in 2002. Prior to his Cantorial studies, Cantor Rosenman received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance at Syracuse University. He spent two years in Israel, first in postgraduate study at the World Union of Jewish Students program in Arad and then the Year-in-Jerusalem part of his studies at HUC. He completed his training with four additional years of Cantorial study in New York.

Cantor Rosenman grew up in Rockland County, NY in the town of Haverstraw and gravitated to music at an early age. Several deep conversations throughout college with people of various different backgrounds led him to take up an interest in religion. These conversations fostered a desire to specifically focus on Jewish music and the idea of using his musical gifts to serve the Jewish community. Singing in a choir at a Reform synagogue in New City enabled this interest to intensify and helped his Cantorial career take root.

Since his ordination, Cantor Rosenman has served positions in New Jersey, Florida, and Ohio. He is a member of the American Conference of Cantors and performs with the New Jersey Cantors’ Concert Ensemble. Cantor and his wife, Amy, have an 8 year old daughter, Samantha. He looks forward to working with Bar and Bat Mitzvah students in preparation for their big days, leading the Adult and Junior Choirs, and worshipping, growing, and learning, with the community of Temple Sha’arey Shalom.

Cantor Rosenman will be meeting his new congregation at Shabbat services on Friday, August 24, and Friday, August 31, and at the temple's Shabbat Under the Stars on Friday, September 7.
